Strengthening Governance and Patient Flow in the Local Emergency Department

Rising patient volumes and resource pressures had led to congestion in the Emergency Department (ED), preventing the hospital from meeting national performance standards.

To address this, I established a multi-agency team and implemented a whole-system governance framework that connected teams across multiple provider organisations. By creating clear communication channels and enabling daily collaboration, we were able to quickly identify blockages both within and outside the ED and implement solutions promptly.

This collaborative approach broke down organisational silos and encouraged teams to focus on shared outcomes. As a result, the acute hospital trust significantly improved its A&E constitutional standards, overall performance, and patient experience.

By aligning governance with practical, day-to-day operational solutions, we ensured the system worked cohesively, delivering efficiency while keeping patient welfare at the centre of care.
