Co-Designing Clinical Systems to Improve Mandatory Cancer Data Reporting

As the accountable lead, I spearheaded the development of a new clinical system designed to improve cancer data collection and support the Trust in meeting national mandatory reporting requirements—an area where compliance had previously fallen short. Using a co-design approach, I collaborated closely with nurses and doctors to identify the data they routinely captured, building functionality that aligned with their workflows. I strategically linked these clinician-required fields to additional mandatory fields, ensuring that essential reporting data was also collected without adding unnecessary burden. This integrated system enabled real-time data entry and increased clinician engagement by reflecting their needs while also fulfilling Trust obligations. The successful implementation of the new cancer data collection system allowed the Trust to meet its national reporting targets for the first time, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining clinical insight with smart system design to achieve both operational and regulatory goals.
